Originally built in 1993, the Bevill Biomedical Research Building is an energy intensive research facility with BSL-3 laboratories and a vivarium. Bernhard provided retro-commissioning and engineering design to update the building’s mechanical infrastructure and increase its energy efficiency.

The project was carefully phased so the building could remain fully occupied while work was being completed. After repairing and replacing mechanical systems, updating the building’s controls, and retro-commissioning the facility, energy savings exceeded $900,000 per year. UAB invested some of these savings back into the building by funding architectural renovations and upgrades to fixtures and furnishings.
