PIH Health Advances Sustainability and Resilience Through Energy-as-a-Service.

PIH Health, a nonprofit regional medical network serving more than three million residents in the greater Los Angeles area, entered into a transformative 30-year Energy-as-a-Service partnership with ENFRA in early 2025. This long-term agreement reflects PIH Health’s strategic commitment to sustainability, operational resilience, and financial stewardship.

Faced with the rising costs of energy and the challenges of aging infrastructure, PIH Health sought a solution that would reduce its environmental footprint and improve energy reliability—without taking on new long-term debt. The partnership enables the health system to upgrade and manage its energy infrastructure in a way that strengthens day-to-day operations and supports long-term goals.

The agreement guarantees $207.7 million in total savings over the 30-year term. Utility expenses will be reduced by $3.8 million annually, a 16.4 percent reduction. In addition to the financial savings, the health system will cut its natural gas consumption by 33.3 percent and reduce carbon emissions by 14.6 percent, significantly advancing its environmental sustainability goals.

PIH Health is reinvesting in its energy systems to support uninterrupted, high-quality care for the communities it serves. By enhancing infrastructure resilience and energy efficiency, the organization is creating a more sustainable and dependable environment for patients, staff, and visitors alike.

As healthcare systems nationwide grapple with climate-related challenges and financial constraints, PIH Health’s forward-thinking approach sets a powerful example. This long-term collaboration ensures that the organization continues to lead in environmental responsibility while delivering exceptional care.
