Becton, Dickinson & Company (BD) operates medical device manufacturing facilities world-wide. ENFRA (previously ETC Group) provided retro-commissioning services for nineteen (19) energy-intensive facilities located throughout the world. The RCx process emphasized identifying and driving saving opportunities and included upfront data collection, on-site investigation, analysis, implementation support, and verification of savings. ENFRA provided engineering analysis of the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems for all space types, including critical clean room and environmentally controlled areas. The investigation deliverable included energy savings and measure costs for airside and waterside systems. Bernhard also provided implementation support during the execution of the RCx measures, guiding controls improvements and training staff. Throughout the process, Bernhard worked closely with members of the corporate sustainability team, as well as management, staff, and process engineers at each facility.
The process-intensive facilities had specific space requirements including humidification, space pressurization, particulate control, and air change requirements. Meeting these requirements and working with various stakeholders, ENFRA identified and designed actionable recommissioning and capital measures, with the potential to save BD Medical total identified Savings of $6,244,000/year.
ENFRA is revising our services to BD to meet their new 2030 sustainability commitments. As an initial step, ENFRA is optimizing the performance of the Building Management System (BMS) upgrade for several sites assuring their performance by commissioning and continued savings reductions for years thereafter with monitoring-based commissioning.
