Beacon Health System entered into a 30-year Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS) partnership with ENFRA to modernize energy infrastructure at Memorial Hospital of South Bend and Elkhart General Hospital. The $54M program provides a long-term and financially sustainable path for upgrading critical systems, improving efficiency, and supporting Beacon’s sustainability goals.
What the Partnership Includes
ENFRA will design, build, finance, and operate a comprehensive package of energy infrastructure upgrades. The planned scope includes:
- A 2.5 MW Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system that is expected to reduce energy consumption by more than 18.8 million kWh each year
- System-wide LED lighting retrofits, retro-commissioning, and hydronic and air-side efficiency improvements
- Optimization of the Building Automation System (BAS) to enhance comfort and streamline building performance
Expected Outcomes
Over the life of the agreement, the project is projected to deliver:
- $191M in utility expense savings
- A 35.5% reduction in annual utility costs
- A 26.2% reduction in carbon emissions across Beacon’s portfolio
- Long-term improvements in reliability and operational resilience for mission-critical systems
By transferring responsibility for energy infrastructure to ENFRA, Beacon can stay focused on delivering high-quality patient care while making meaningful progress toward sustainability and operational excellence. The long-term savings created through the EaaS model provide opportunities for future investments in patient care, technology, and community programs.
